Put our best foot forward.
This familiar phrase is often understood to mean making a good first impression or giving our very best effort. In a Christian spiritual sense it reaches far deeper. It is about choosing each day to step forward in faith, obedience, and Christlike character, regardless of the circumstances around us.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He shall direct your paths”
Proverbs 3:5–6
Every step we take is an opportunity to reflect Jesus. Putting our best foot forward is not about striving for perfection or impressing others, it is about allowing the Holy Spirit to shape our walk so that our lives become a testimony of God’s grace.
At times our feet have walked through valleys of disappointment, failure, or pain. We may carry the dust of past seasons, yet God continually calls us to rise and move forward. He strengthens weary feet, establishes uncertain steps, and leads us onto paths of righteousness for His name’s sake (Psalm 23:3).
What matters is not where we have been, but the direction we are now walking.
To put your best foot forward is to:
Choose faith over fear.
Choose forgiveness over bitterness.
Choose humility over pride.
Choose love over offence.
Choose obedience over compromise.
Every godly step plants seeds for eternity. Even the smallest act of faithfulness becomes significant in the hands of God. As we surrender our walk to Him, our footsteps leave behind the fragrance of Christ, becoming a witness to those who are searching for hope.
Allow the Lord to establish your steps. Walk confidently, not because of your own strength, but because Christ goes before you. He is the One who orders your steps, lights your path, and empowers you to finish the race set before you.
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.”
Psalm 37:23
Before we can put our best foot forward, God first asks us to take our old shoes off. We cannot walk into a new season wearing yesterday’s mindset, wounds, or LIMITATIONS.
“Before you put your best foot forward, make sure it’s standing on holy ground.”
When our feet are planted in Christ, every step becomes prophetic. Every footprint declares His Kingdom. Every path becomes an opportunity for His glory to be revealed.
“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news…”
Isaiah 52:7
When Joshua stood at the edge of the Promised Land, the first step required courage. When Peter stepped out of the boat, the first step required faith. When the prodigal son turned toward home, the first step required repentance. Each of these “best steps” was not perfect—it was obedient.
May your feet carry the Gospel of peace, your walk display the character of Christ, and every step you take bring glory to the One who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light. Put your best foot forward, not for the applause of people, but for the honour of the King of kings.
Prayer
“Father, establish my feet upon Your Rock. Remove every weight that hinders my walk and every path that leads away from Your heart. Let every step I take be ordered by Your Spirit. May my feet carry peace, truth, and the good news of Jesus Christ. Wherever You send me, let me walk with courage, humility, and unwavering faith. May every footprint I leave behind become a testimony of Your goodness and a pathway for others to find You. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.”
